The only team to win a championship as a #8 seed was Awkward in 2011. Their improbable run began with a 2-1 win over the Ball Busters in a single elimination 1st round matchup. Next they took a pair of 1-run games from the defending champion Bunt Pirates. They trailed the Machine 3-2 in the 7th inning of the deciding game of the final, tied it on a clutch sacrifice fly, and survived a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the 7th, before scoring twice in the top of the 9th for the win.
The Machine had an equally difficult path to the final, beating Duke’s 3-1, 6-8, and 7-6 in their semifinal.
